Information Services

Our professional Librarians work individually with clients at the Information Services Desk, to:

  • assist in identifying the type of information which would best meet their information needs
  • formulate keywords for database searching
  • explain how to access and utilise information to answer their information needs
  • ensure that clients are aware of strategies for searching electronic resources to find what they want.

Resources available at the Learning Commons

Electronic resources

The Learning Commons' web-based catalogue is the best resource for finding items held across the Learning Commons network.

The Learning Commons subscribes to many electronic databases. These offer access to indexes and abstracts of journal articles, full-text journal articles, encyclopedias and newspapers.

Subject guides are lists of resources in different formats, from internet sites to periodicals and reference books on specific subjects. Prepared by Liaison Librarians, they are subject specific guides to the Learning Commons' resources and an excellent resource list for students and staff. Teaching staff should contact their Liaison Librarian to arrange for a Subject guide to be prepared for themself or their students' use.

Print and audio-visual resources

  • Books - general, reference, paperbacks, academic reserve and language development collection.
  • Periodicals- journals, magazines, annual reports and newspapers.
  • Audio-visual - includes videos, DVDs, audio cassettes and maps.

Daily newspapers

The Learning Commons holds a collection of the following daily newspapers: The Herald Sun, The Age, The Australian Financial Review and The Australian. Ask at the Information Desk to access current and back copies of these papers. The availability of newspapers in each campus can vary. The Learning Commons subscribes to NewsBank which indexes a number of national, regional and local Australian newspapers. This database is available on the student and staff networks.
